Dog ownership is fun, but not always easy. Make sure that you have these simple things taken care of so that your dog is happy and healthy…and so are you.
#1 – Leashes
All dog owners should have several leashes of different lengths. Forget retractable leashes. They are confusing for dogs. Dogs cannot fathom why the leash is long one minute and short the next. They have no chance of adjusting their behavior when the rules constantly change. Have a long leash for carefree outings, like hiking and long country walks. Make sure that you call your dog in to you often so she knows that you still care where she is and what she does. Then have a shorter leash for situations where you need more formal control, like obedience class or pet therapy visits. Show the leash to the dog. They can learn to associate the gear with the setting and rules.
#2 – Safe, durable bowls
All pets should have food and water bowls that are not plastic. Some pets are sensitive to the oils associated with plastic. Plastic can get scratched up and be more difficult to clean. Stainless steel and even ceramic are better choices.
#3 – Portable water dish
Every dog needs her own collapsible water dish. If you plan to take your dog along, especially in summer, a collapsible water dish can make things easier. It can slip in your pocket or purse easily and you are sure that no other animals have been using it. Dog friendly restaurants offer water dishes to dogs, but you just never know if the dog before yours was ill or carries something that yours has not been exposed to. It is easy and affordable to avoid this issue with a collapsible dish.
#4 – Parasite control
All dogs need prescription parasite control. Ask your vet which products are most appropriate for your area and which seasons are prime time for parasites. Many areas in the US have parasites year-round. Heartworms kill dogs. Fleas may itchy and irritated skin and flea dermatitis. Ticks spread disease. Prevention is easy. Treatment is hard.
#5 – Poop bags
Poop bags are the latest accessory for the savvy dog owner. They make being a responsible dog owner easier. If your dog makes a mess, you clean it up and stash it in your bags for disposal. Now they come in handy dispensers that can tie onto your dog’s leash or your belt. Some parks have fecal disposal bags and stations, but if you have your own, you won’t get caught unprepared.
Make life easier and more fun with your dog. A little preparation and “know how” can save you hassle and grief.
