What you teach your French Bulldog is really up to you and what you are planning on doing together. If you just got her for a friend and companion, you’re training goals might be minimal. On the other hand, if you plan on competing in performance events such as obedience, your goals will be much higher. But regardless of what you plan on doing with your Frenchie, there are a few simple behaviors that may even save your dog’s life, and therefore, should be taught. The following are the 3 cues all French Bulldogs should know.
#1 – Leave It
French Bulldogs love food. They will steal it any chance they get. Some are also big on stealing shoes, socks and other items to chew. The answer is a solid “leave it” cue. It can keep them from chewing your shoe or stealing your dinner. It can make walks more pleasant – you can ask him to leave the grass he has sniffed for the hundredth time, or all the people he wants to greet. Most importantly, it can save your Frenchie’s life if he is about to eat something dangerous – this includes toxic human foods or even something unsafe he comes across during his walk.
#2 – Come
A solid recall is important for your French Bulldog if he is ever off-leash in public areas (where it’s allowed!), or even to avoid a headache when he’s in a big backyard. In addition, a solid recall can save the life of your Frenchie if she bolts out the door toward the street or slips out of her leash during a walk. It’s just a good basic cue for any dog to know.
#3 – Stay
Like “come,” “stay” can help keep your French Bulldog inside the house when you open the front door. “Stay” is also useful if you are trying to get your French Bulldog to not chase the neighbor’s cat or the bunny that pops out of nowhere. Finally, it helps teach your Frenchie self-control, which is never a bad thing.
