Most of us can list about a thousand things we’d rather do than have dental work. It can be awkward, painful and anxiety-packed, but Dr. Cameron T. Garrett has discovered a way to improve the experience for his patients.
Dr. Garrett and his wife, Debra adopted a toothless senior rescue dog named Karma and it turns out she loves nothing more than snuggling up to patients as they undergo their dental procedures.
The Garretts originally intended Karma to be a soothing companion for Debra’s 82-year-old mother who suffers from Alzheimers. Rescuing a mellow pooch from Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco seemed like a perfect fit.
Although Karma was just what they were looking for, the Garretts soon realized that the burden of caring for a pet was too great for Debra’s mother. The couple decided that they would keep the sweet Chihuahua mix themselves.
They were instantly taken with Karma’s gentle, loving disposition. It was as if she was born to be a therapy dog… which gave the Garretts an idea. Since the couple both work at a dental practice and tend to have long, demanding hours, they decided to bring Karma to work with them.
And of course, she instantly became a beloved fixture around the office. With her serene demeanor, loving personality and history of dental challenges, Karma makes the perfect “comfort canine” for the dental practice!
Anxious or frightened patients are encouraged to snuggle Karma on their laps during their procedures. Debra Garrett told The Dodo:
“It’s magical to watch a true dental-phobic patient melt while holding Karma in one of our chairs. Even patients who didn’t think it would help much found that their appointment went much better with Karma on their lap.”
November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month. Consider making a classic cutie like Karma yours for the holidays! Visit Muttville’s list of adoptable seniors in California or check out The Mr. Mo Project on the East Coast.
