Tom Hardy and his dog, Woodstock, have been best buddies since the day the English actor found the 10-week-old puppy terrified on the side of a highway. That dramatic rescue eventually turned into a life-long bond.
Hardy and Woodstock’s relationship has been a well-documented love story, with the dog frequently showing up on the red carpet and on film sets to keep his best friend company. Hardy and Woodstock spent six years together, but on June 5, Woodstock passed away. Six months ago, the rescue dog was diagnosed with an aggressive case of a muscle disease called polymyotisis. Despite unfaltering support from Hardy, his friends, and the best veterinary care, Woodstock lost his battle at the age of six.

Overcome with grief for the loss of his best friend, Hardy published a touching letter in Woodstock’s honor. He wrote,
“He [Woodstock] was far too young to leave us, and we at home are devastated by his loss. I am ultimately grateful for his loyal companionship and love, and it is of some great comfort that he is no longer suffering. Above all I am completely gutted. The world for me was a better place with him in it and by my side.”
The actor reminisced about the night he first met Woodstock and the adventures they’ve had together since. He said,
“Everyone who met him loved him. He didn’t have a bad bone in his body. All he knew was love.”

Hardy wrote about how on the night they found each other, Woodstock was scared, filthy, and close to death. But when Hardy took the pup to the pet store, he was “happy and playful.”
He loved to chase ducks even though he couldn’t swim, preferred toilet water over the water in his bowl, and chewed through trailer doors while making friends everywhere he went. The actor signed the letter,
“Thank you Woody for choosing to find us. We will love you and be with you and you with us forever. Never ever ever forgotten. Your boy, Tom.”
