Dogs are so cute, they bring tears to our eyes. But some people’s eyes water for other reasons. It comes along with that tickle in your nose – and then here comes the sneezing! When you really love dogs, you don’t want anything – not even allergies – to stop you from getting a pet.
All dogs will have some dander and lost fur. But some have coats that help them keep it to themselves, so it doesn’t go floating around in the air and into your nostrils. These pups are considered some of the best hypoallergenic dogs, and are great breeds for allergy sufferers!
#1 – Italian Greyhound
Considered one of the easiest breeds to groom, the Italian greyhound only needs a rubdown and an occasional bath. These dogs shed little to no hair.
#2 – Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
Although the Wheaten Terrier does have extensive and specific grooming needs, when the needs are met, they shed very little and are considered good candidates for an allergy prone home.
#3 – Havanese
A puppy’s coat may be corded, which requires extensive upkeep. It can stay long and would require regular grooming sessions, or may be clipped short for easier manageability. These little cuties don’t shed like their sister dogs, the Shavanese which are not considered good for allergy sufferers.
#4 – Portuguese Water Dog
Bred to assist fisherman off the coast of Portugal, these athletic swimmers require little upkeep to their fur other than routine clipping.
#5 – Bedlington Terrier
These exuberant, affectionate dogs are sought out by allergy sufferers. Their soft coat requires regular grooming, but they shed very little.
#6 – Chinese Crested Dog
This breed comes in the hair and hairless variety. Both types exhibit no dog odor and are good for allergy sufferers. The hairless needs bathing more often and lotion needs to be massaged into their skin to keep it from dying out. The one with hair needs brushed often, and sheds very little as long as the coat is maintained.
#7 – Schnauzer
The wiry coat does need daily brushing to prevent matting. Trim around the eyes and nose, the Schnauzer needs stripped twice a year.
#8 – Bichon Frise
These dogs do require professional grooming every four weeks or so to keep their coat trimmed and clean. When the coat requirements are met, the Bichon Frise sheds very little.
#9 – Poodle
The Poodle is used as a cross to almost every hypoallergenic designer breed available. Cockapoo, Labradoodle, Bernedoodles (Bernese Mountain dog mix) and the list goes on. Poodles don’t shed, brushing and clipping are required.
#10 – Cairn Terrier
Originally bred to hunt foxes and badgers, Cairn Terriers require brushing several times a week to keep their dense coat from matting. They shed little as long as long their grooming needs are met.
