Senior Dog Who’s Been Neglected For Years Finally Feels What It’s Like To Have A Loving Home

This is the story of Max–a fifteen-year-old dog who was severely neglected by his previous owner.

It was November 4 at around 2am when Max’s owner left him at in an overnight emergency drop off cage at Southeast Volusia Humane Society (SEVHS) in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Shelter workers were shocked at Max’s terrible condition. They quickly took care of him, made him comfortable, and got him evaluated.

They didn’t know other details about Max’s past. His owner only left a note that the dog’s name is Max and he is 15-years-old.

But judging at Max’s physical appearance, they know he was a neglected dog. He was emaciated, he had a severe skin condition, and he had overgrown toenails.

Thankfully, he had no other health issues and his heartworm test came back negative. However, when the shelter staff saw Max’s behavior toward humans and other animals, they knew Max never felt love and affection. He’d most likely lived in isolation.

Luckily for Max, it didn’t take him very long to find a foster parent. A kindhearted man named Jared McKenney offered to foster Max and promised to give him the medical attention and all the love that he needs.

Max will be going home today with Jarred, his foster. I am so thrilled that he will never have to go back into a shelter again!!!! This is his freedom photo <3

For the very first time, Max experienced what a real, loving home was. At first he didn’t know what to do. “He (Max) didn’t know what the inside of a house was,” Jared told The Dodo

Max has had a very rough couple of days. He had a bit of a reaction to one of his meds. He went back to the vet and…

But after a few weeks, Max’s health improved. He gained weight, his hair grew back, and his skin was getting better.

Max is feeling better and eating and drinking well. His foster Jared took him out for a very quiet supper to get some outside fresh air and some nice people said hello and petted him <3

His behavior improved too. He shied away from people before, but after spending several weeks at Jared’s loving home, he started to come out of his shell.

Max started to show some love. And he started making new friends too!

Making new friends.

All Max needed was someone to love him. He’s currently being cared for by his foster dad, but he’s still searching for a loving, forever home.
