United Pet Group, part of Spectrum Brands, has recalled multiple nationally distributed rawhide dog chews due to chemical contamination.
Updated – January 2022
(original recall – April 2018)
Eight more brands of rawhide chews under United Pet Group have been added to last week’s four-brand recall. Below you’ll find the full list of brands that have been affected, which include products that are carried by big-name pet stores, grocery stores, and retailers.
Reason for recall:
The recall is voluntary and has been issued for the following reason, according to Spectrum Brands:
United Pet Group realized that specific rawhide chew manufacturing facilities in Mexico and Colombia, as well as one of its suppliers in Brazil, were using a quaternary ammonium compound mixture as a processing aid in the manufacturing of rawhide chews.
The compound is an anti-microbial chemical that is approved for cleaning food processing equipment. But it has not been approved in the U.S. as a processing aid in the production of rawhide chews for dogs.

Reports and side effects:
The company received few reports of illness, and the biggest complaint was an “unpleasant odor.” Some dogs began vomiting and had diarrhea after consuming the products.
Spectrum Brands says:
Exposure to quaternary ammonium compounds through direct ingestion may cause the following symptoms in dogs: reduced appetite, and gastric irritation including diarrhea and vomiting.
These symptoms may require treatment by a veterinarian depending on severity.

So…what chews or treats are safe? What are good to give?
Our mind goes right to the question – How can I be a more informed owner? What should I look for? whenever we read these disturbing recalls. There are three key things that seem to always stay constant.
— Look for natural products that look as close to their original form as possible: An example would be Project Paws. They have 100% beef liver and 100% chicken breast protein food mixers. 1 ingredient, natural and healthy. It looks like what it is.
— Look for products with as little processing as possible: Natural grass fed Bully Sticks are the best alternative to rawhide (for example). Not only are they safer, they have very little processing other than time and temperature. P.S. (Stay away from low odor Bully Sticks in general – they are bleached with chemicals to remove odors. )
— Sourced and packaged in the USA :The standards for products are substantially higher in the U.S. than anywhere else. Especially for goods designed for consumption. BONUS – if they are made in a human grade facility or USDA facility the quality control is even higher. Look for this info via a badge or on the bag. If nothing is there, put it back.
