Many dog parents rely on dental chews to keep their canine’s teeth clean. But like dog food and treats, these dental products can get recalled. In a recent recall, Ark Naturals voluntarily pulled their brushless toothpaste products from the shelves after realizing that a mold-inhibiting ingredient wasn’t included in certain units.

Ark Naturals notified their supplier that some value packs of their dental products didn’t receive a necessary mold-inhibiting ingredient during production. The company didn’t want to put customers at risk of mold forming on the products.

Health Risks Associated with Moldy Consumables

Dogs who eat moldy treats can face a variety of health concerns, including digestive issues like vomiting and diarrhea. In extreme cases, moldy products could lead to tremors or seizures in dogs. If your dog ate one of the affected products and you notice unusual symptoms, take them to the vet right away.

Luckily, no illnesses have been reported related to this recall.

“After investigating the situation, we initiated a voluntary recall as a preventative measure for these products due to a chance of mold forming before the product reaches the end of its shelf life,” Ark Naturals wrote in a statement. “Although we have received no confirmed reports of illness caused by these products at this time, we decided to recall products that may have been impacted out of an abundance of caution.”

If your dog ate any of the recalled products, monitor them closely and contact your vet if any unusual symptoms occur.

“Quality and integrity are two of Ark Naturals’ core values that we always strive to uphold. We stand by our high-quality natural ingredients and are committed to offering only the highest quality treats for our pets. In our 10+ years as a brand serving your pets, this is the first product recall we’ve issued and we will do everything in our power to prevent situations like this from happening again,” Ark Naturals wrote.
