Raws for Paws and Smokehouse Pet Products have issued recalls on specific items in their product lines due to potential contamination with Salmonella. Inspectors discovered the problem in Smokehouse’s four-ounce packages of “Beefy Munchies” and Raws for Paws’ one-pound and five-pound packages of Ground Turkey Food for Pets while conducting routine product sampling and testing.
The companies are encouraging pet owners to discontinue the products immediately.
Raws for Paws is recalling its Ground Turkey Pet Food in 5-pound and 1-pound tubes. The potentially affected food was distributed directly to consumers and via online mail order throughout Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
The tubes are packaged into regular Turkey Pet Food cases and Pet Food Combo Pack cases with case codes of 9900008, 9900009, 9900014, and 9900015.
The manufacture date of the Turkey Pet Food cases is 10/12/2017 and the manufacture dates of Combo Pack cases are between 10/12/2017 and 2/2/2018.
To date, two illnesses have been reported in connection with this problem. Raws for Paws asks that consumers contact them directly at 612-465-0372 to determine if their product is subject to this recall and for more information about disposal or return instructions.
Smokehouse Pet Products reports the recalled “Beef Munchies” were sold at retail locations in Colorado, Michigan, North Carolina, and Washington with the lot number 449294 and a best used by date of 10/25/19. They are encouraging consumers to check their packages for the reported lot numbers and return opened and unopened packages to the place of purchase for a full refund.
No illnesses have been reported in association with “Beefy Munchies” at this time.
According to Dog Food Adviser, ingesting Salmonella can cause the following symptoms in dogs:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal cramping
- Fever
- Bloody diarrhea
The FDA reports that healthy adult dogs rarely become ill because of Salmonella. Senior dogs, puppies, and dogs with compromised immune systems are most at risk. At-risk dogs that ingest high amounts of contaminated product may also show signs of unusual lethargy and lack of appetite.
Dog owners are also at risk of transmitting the bacteria by handling contaminated pet products and not washing their hands afterward. In serious cases, Salmonella can lead to arterial infections, muscle pain, eye irritation, arthritis, and urinary tract symptoms.
