According to Dog Food Adviser, ingesting Salmonella can cause the following symptoms in dogs:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal cramping
- Fever
- Bloody diarrhea
The FDA reports that healthy adult dogs rarely become ill because of Salmonella. Senior dogs, puppies, and dogs with compromised immune systems are most at risk. At-risk dogs that ingest high amounts of contaminated product may also show signs of unusual lethargy and lack of appetite.
Dog owners are also at risk of transmitting the bacteria by handling contaminated pet products and not washing their hands afterward. In serious cases, Salmonella can lead to arterial infections, muscle pain, eye irritation, arthritis, and urinary tract symptoms.
If you suspect your dog is ill because of consuming contaminated food or treats, don’t hesitate to contact a veterinarian. For more information, read the official Dog Food Adviser announcements here:
