Yesterday, February 5th 2014, the FDA issued a press release regarding a voluntary recall of 3 brands or dog and cat food by ProPet LLC. According to the FDA, fortunately there have not yet been any reports of illness caused by this contamination.

These brands were distributed to select stores and online retailers in the following states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin & West Virginia.
Dogs or cats who become infected by salmonella may become lethargic, experience normal diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, have a fever, or begin vomiting. Some animals will also experience a decreased appetite. Keep in mind that at times pets may have no symptoms at all, but can still carry Salmonella and affect other animals and people. If you suspect your pet has any of these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian immediately.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
