Hope For Paws received a call from animal advocate Mary Chatman. She found a dog, but he ran away whenever she tried to approach him. When Eldad and his team arrived, the poor pup was sleeping beneath a car, too worn out to move. Eldad took the opportunity to attempt to leash the dog while he slept. As Eldad tightened the snare around his neck, the dog woke up frightened. He lashed about, but Eldad continued to soothe him with kind words. Since the dog still appeared to be overwhelmed, Eldad gave him some food, hoping this would appease him.
The food trick didn’t work. The poor, terrified pup had lost trust in humans completely. Since this rescue was the day before Independence Day, Eldad named the dog Patriot. Eldad pulled the dog toward his car. Even though the dog wasn’t comfortable leaving the streets behind, Eldad had no choice. He had to do his job and make sure this sweet boy got the help he needed.
The dog shook when Eldad tried to pet him. He was obviously distressed but Eldad promised he was friendly and would never hurt him. In a calm voice, Eldad explained to Patriot that while he was scared of him now, the fireworks the following day would scare him more. Patriot settled down, and Eldad was able to stroke his head and pick him up.
Eldad drove Patriot to CARES where he would receive a thorough vet check and grooming. Amazingly, Patriot’s worries seemed to melt away bit by bit. Patriot was heavily matted with fox tails stuck in his fur. A good grooming session would alleviate some of his pain. During the grooming session, Patriot behaved like the good boy he is, a stark contrast from his behavior on the street.
Patriot’s story is far from over. He will soon be ready for a forever home where he will be cherished for the rest of his life. To see the pup’s full rescue, click the video below.
