There’s no doubt that having a dog is one of the biggest joys in life. A cuddly, little (or big) buddy, who greets you when you walk in the door. It’s hard to imagine life without your furry friend to share it with.
Sure, sometimes having a dog can be stressful, but it’s just one dog, right? You can handle it! But, what if you had over 50 dogs depending on you day in and day out?
Welcome to everyday life at a no-kill shelter.
Dogs end up at these shelters for various reasons, some families just can’t handle the responsibilities of dog ownership, other times dogs run away from home without proper ID and end up at the shelter, or heaven forbid, the dog ended up at a no-kill shelter because some jerk thought abusing a defenseless animal was ok.
It doesn’t really matter why the dog is there. The bottom line is that those dogs deserve love and fun, just as much as a dog living at home with a family. So, when we got that chance, we had to do something about it.
Last week, iHeartDogs.com was able to team with our good friends over at BarkBox.com. The goal was simple, have a lot of fun with some shelter dogs (and help out the shelter staff as well).
BarkBox was kind enough to donate some boxes for the dogs. Needless to say, that got their tails wagging.
If you’ve never heard of BarkBox, it’s an amazing monthly subscription box just for dogs. Each month a new box arrives at your doorstep. It’s filled with an ever-changing variety of treats and toys that dogs love.
The boxes that we donated had: Butcher’s Block Trachea Chew, Nootie Hickory Bacon Jerky Chews, Feel Good Treat Company Trail Blazin Beef Blitz, a West Paw Design Bumi and a BarkMade Circus Elephant.
The dogs weren’t hesitant to dive in. Striker (on the left) and Toby (on the right) didn’t know what they had at first. Needless to say, Striker made quick friends with the circus elephant toy.
In the back you can see Lucky. Lucky is a newer dog to the shelter and was a little more laid back than the others, as you can see. But the second Lucky got her teeth on the Bumi, she wouldn’t let go.
I’ve never seen so many tails wag when we opened up the bacon jerky chews and blazin beef blitz. Every dog also got their own Butcher’s Block Trachea Chew as well. Minnie (below) was a little greedy and went back for seconds. If she had opposable thumbs I think she might have opened all the bags. Of course we gave more though. I mean, how could you resist.
All in all it was a pretty awesome day!
But, this wonderful experience could happen for you as well. “How?” you might ask? Simple. The first thing you can do is find a local no-kill shelter. They are always looking for volunteers to come in and love on the dogs. Something as simple as playing fetch can make a dog’s day that much better.
The next thing you can do is purchase a BarkBox. I know that sounds weird, but BarkBox actually has a program where they donate to many different shelters. By buying a box, you support numerous shelters. Not to mention, you get some pretty cool gifts for your pup.
