You don’t need to tell an animal lover that puppy mills are horrific. They’re virtual torture chambers filled with cramped cages, filth, starvation, and disease.
That’s why advocates are adamantly against purchasing from pet stores and online; these “puppy mill” dogs often make up their supply. Shelters, rescues, and even reputable breeders are the only way to go when it comes to adding a furry friend to the family.

Unfortunately, in February this year, the USDA removed animal welfare reports from its site, making it difficult for advocates to access records. (It’s thought that this was due to a lawsuit, even though the charges were later dropped.)
Although the lack of accessible information makes it more difficult to pursue offenders, the Humane Society of the United States continues to investigate puppy mills.

This year’s annual “Horrible Hundred” list has been released, uncovering irresponsible puppy breeders. According to the official report, here are some disturbing but important takeaways from this year’s findings:
-This year, Missouri had the most dealers in our report for the fifth year in a row, with 19 dealers, followed by a three-way tie among Ohio (12), Kansas (12) and Pennsylvania (12).
-Researchers found at least nine dealers in this year’s report selling online on PuppyFind.com. PuppyFind.com has repeatedly been linked to problem puppy mills listed in our Horrible Hundred reports. A number of the breeders in this report also advertise on other online outlets, including internet classified sites and on social media. This trend appears to be on the rise and is of high concern.
-45 dealers included are new to the report, and 55 are “repeat offenders” who have appeared in one or more of our prior puppy mill reports.

According to The Animal Rescue Site, last year the USDA revoked the licenses of seven puppy mills that had made the “Horrible Hundred” list. Although there needs to be more closures, the more information that is gathered and brought to light, the easier it is to shut these horrible operations down.
