A Golden Retriever’s mischievous habit of digging in the yard turned into a major public service when he unearthed something no one expected. Kenyon is an 18-month old pup who lives with his family in Yamhill County, Oregon. His family wishes to remain anonymous, but they ended up calling the police after their dog dug up 15 ounces of black tar heroin that had been buried in their backyard.

When the family first saw what Kenyon had found, they thought it was a time capsule left behind by the home’s previous owners. They decided to film themselves opening it, but they soon realized their time capsule wasn’t what it seemed. They contacted the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office, and the contents of the suspicious package was soon confirmed. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Kenyon had found $85,000 worth of illegal drugs. Sheriff Tim Svenson said,
“Opioid addiction and overdose deaths are on the rise and with the help of Kenyon this large quantity of heroin is removed from our community.”

To thank Kenyon for his efforts, Sheriff Svenson awarded the amateur detection dog with an official Yamhill County K-9 citation ribbon. He’s been named an honorary narcotics K-9 for life, and the entire community is grateful that the harmful substance has been confiscated and kept out of their streets. Good boy, Kenyon!
