We have all seen the sad faces of dogs lying balled up on the cold ground tied to a tree or post. These days, it is fortunately becoming less common. Most people know that it is not good for a dog to be tied all the time and social media helps highlight the plights of such mistreated animals.
Hypothermia is a very real threat for animals restrained from seeking good shelter. Tied pets are certainly at risk. They are not able to move to keep their circulation going, nor are they able to seek warmth on their own. If you try to intervene, you could be in danger of a poor reaction from the pet or the people. It is important to know what to do.
The Humane Society of the United States has published a list of actions that you can take. Animal neglect is a misdemeanor in most states and a felony in a few.
If you see a pet being neglected, document what you see and even take photos if you can. Make sure you record the time, date, location, and how many and which animals are involved.
Do not take matters into your own hands, but contact animal control in your area. Make sure you write down the person receiving the complaint so you can follow up if nothing is done for the animal(s).
The Humane Society is available to advise you, but cannot take legal action to defend pets.
Above all, keep yourself safe. Trespassing on someone’s property could put you at risk. Try to use the appropriate channels to get help for the pet. This problem can only be remedied if we all stay alert for cases and do our best to spread the word about good animal care.
