Some people say that dogs are like potato chips and no one can have just one, but is this really a good thing? Can a single dog be happy? Should you have more than one dog?
Like so many things, the answer is not one size fits all. It lies in the individual dogs and the individual environment. If you have a lot of time for your dog and can provide regular playtime and exercise, you are probably all your single dog needs. Many people work from home and their dog is happy to hang out with them at their desk.
Bigger dogs seem to benefit from more exercise or at least require more space to get exercise. Sometimes it is nice to have another dog that is willing to run and play more than you are. But if you have a neighbor or friend with a dog that can come along for play times, you may not want to divide your time by owning a second dog.
Dogs are descended from pack dwelling wolves, so most dogs feel safest when they are not alone. If you work away from home and have long hours, your dog might be more entertained if he had a canine brother or sister to pass the day with.
Some dogs have other species as their housemates and seem to get along just fine. Think about who your dog is and ask yourself who you are. Can you afford to care for more than one dog? Do you have room? Would it take away attention from your current dog? Would he care? Is your dog athletic and playful and you are not? Another dog might be a wonderful playmate. Is your dog a jealous dog who would resent the intrusion of a second pet? Another dog might be an unwanted invasion.
The best advice is to follow your heart. Don’t let someone else’s opinion decide what’s right for you. Devote time to watching your dog and try to get a feel for how her day is spent. If you decide that she is going to be an only dog, make sure you are meeting her exercise and emotional needs regularly. If you think that she would appreciate having another dog in the house, see if you can find a rescue that will allow you to foster to adopt so you can see them interact together before you decide. It should be a dog pack that you are all happy with. There is no doubt that dog lovers have enough love to go around, but let your dog help you decide if he does.
