Dog Abandoned During Snow Storm Shocks Rescuers By Revealing Her 4 Newborn Puppies

| December 13, 2016

Depending on where you live, your city may have been hit with several inches of snow in the past 24 hours. One of those places was Muskegon, Michigan, where a poor pup with her newborn litter was – quite literally – left out in the cold.

According to a Facebook post by local shelter Pound Buddies, they received an emergency call just after midnight about an abandoned dog who was wandering around in an empty lot. The caller said that the pup had been noticed earlier that day, but no one had come to claim her, and the weather had turned brutal. It also appeared that she may have been injured.

Robert Pringle, a shelter staff member, didn’t think twice about getting out of his warm bed to brave the storm and rescue the dog. When he arrived on the scene, along with a police officer, they saw the snow-covered pup curled up in a ball.

Luckily, this sweet girl welcomed his approach as if she knew he was there to help, and he easily slipped a leash around her neck. But when she got up to follow him to the car, he was shocked at what she’d been hiding: there were four newborn puppies where she’d been laying!

This poor mama dog had been shielding her litter from the snow and cold – and because of her maternal instincts, they survived.

Back at the shelter, the furry family finally enjoyed some well-deserved TLC.

“Robert arrived at Pound Buddies just before 1:00am and set up a warm, soft, safe kennel for mama and babies, complete with a much needed meal for mama. The whole time, mama seemed to know exactly what was going on and she allowed Robert to guide her and her babies to safety,” Pound Buddies wrote on Facebook.

They posted an update this morning, saying that the lovable mama was thrilled to receive love and attention from the shelter staff. They say she is “an older girl” and her babies are estimated to be about two days old. They consider this beautiful rescue “a Christmas miracle,” and we certainly agree!

Facebook commenters have already shown interest in fostering the mama dog, and her pups will be available for adoption once they’re ready. But for now, this little family will enjoy being warm, cared for, and loved over the holidays.
