Dog owners often wonder what their furry friends do when left alone, but few would expect to witness a heroic rescue like the one that unfolded in a backyard pool in Boksburg, South Africa. For Chucky, a 13-year-old toy Pomeranian, a routine day nearly turned into a disaster when he accidentally slipped into the family’s swimming pool. Though the little dog managed to stay afloat, he couldn’t climb out, and with no one around, he faced the real danger of exhaustion. Fortunately, Chucky wasn’t alone.

The little dog’s loyal companion, Jessie, a 7-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier, noticed the situation and sprang into action. Footage from the family’s security camera captured the tense moments as Jessie tried to figure out how to save her struggling friend. The video shows Jessie repeatedly attempting to pull Chucky out, carefully considering how to help without causing harm. What the brief footage doesn’t reveal is that the entire rescue took 34 minutes.

Despite the challenge, Jessie never gave up, and after several attempts, she finally succeeded in pulling Chucky to safety by gently grabbing his ear. Once out of the water, the two dogs joyfully scampered off together, their friendship stronger than ever.

The dogs’ owners, Byron Thanarayen and his wife Melissa, were puzzled when they noticed Chucky’s head was wet and decided to investigate. Initially, Byron dismissed Melissa’s suggestion that Chucky had fallen into the pool, as their dogs never went near the water unsupervised. “We tried to figure out how he got wet,” Byron told The Times South Africa. “We thought he might have dipped his head in the water, but there was no sign of any mess.”

It wasn’t until they reviewed the security footage that they realized what had truly happened. Watching the rescue unfold was emotional for the couple. “It was heartbreaking to see,” Byron admitted. “Even now, it’s hard for us to watch the video, thinking about what could have happened if Jessie wasn’t there.”

Jessie, a rescue dog adopted from the SPCA four years ago, had been returned by previous owners who claimed she didn’t get along with other dogs. But in Byron and Melissa’s home, Jessie fit in perfectly from day one, getting along with their other two pets. “Jessie is the best dog we’ve ever had,” Byron said proudly. “I’m especially proud of her since she’s the youngest.”

Byron explained that while their dogs know how to swim, they only swim when supervised. The incident served as a wake-up call, and the couple has since decided to install a pool cover. “We never thought we needed one, but now we see how important it is,” Byron said.

What these dogs went through must have been terrifying and painful. That's why we're demanding true and complete justice for these pups and their family.

Pet drownings in family pools are more common than many realize, with thousands of incidents occurring each year, though most go unreported. Experts recommend securing pools with gates, teaching dogs to swim, and ensuring they are always supervised around water. Chucky’s near-drowning had a happy ending thanks to Jessie’s quick thinking, but not all dogs are as lucky. This story serves as a powerful reminder of both the dangers pools can pose to pets and the incredible bond between dogs.
