This heartwarming story features Gus, a remarkable baby gorilla whose birth was nothing short of miraculous, given the critically endangered status of western lowland gorillas. Gus holds a special place in history as the first gorilla born at Texas’ Fort Worth Zoo in its 107-year history. His arrival was eagerly anticipated by the zoo staff and the community, making his birth an event of significant celebration and hope for the species. Gus’s existence symbolizes a triumph for conservation efforts and a beacon of hope for the survival of his species.
Naturally, his arrival was met with immense excitement, not only because of his rarity but also because baby animals have a universal appeal. “Everyone loves babies. I mean, everyone with a soul loves babies. And that’s why when there is a new baby at the Fort Worth Zoo, we all get a little excited,” a spokesperson for the zoo said.
In anticipation of Gus’s birth, the zoo collaborated with Schaefer AD Co. to develop a comprehensive campaign that highlighted the similarities between baby gorillas and human children, especially in terms of growth and development. The campaign aimed to raise awareness about the plight of western lowland gorillas and foster a deeper connection between zoo visitors and the animals.
Little did they know, Gus would soon create the perfect publicity moment by meeting a 2-year-old girl named Braylee. One day, while visiting the zoo with her family, Braylee encountered Gus through the glass of his enclosure. What happened next was pure magic. The two began to play a spontaneous game of Patty Cake, their tiny hands mirroring each other’s movements through the transparent barrier.
A touching photo of 5-month-old Gus and Braylee playing Patty Cake through a glass wall quickly went viral, captivating hearts worldwide. The innocent joy and curiosity displayed by both the toddler and the baby gorilla struck a chord with people everywhere, symbolizing the universal language of play and connection.
The story gained significant traction, with a video on Inside Edition’s YouTube page garnering over 3.5 million views. This delightful interaction showcases the universal beauty of babies, whether human or animal. Seeing tiny Gus beside the toddler is simply adorable. Their interaction underscored the campaign’s message about the similarities between humans and gorillas, emphasizing the importance of protecting these majestic creatures.
Gus’s charm was evident from the start, as a massive contest was held to name him, attracting over 8,800 votes. The choices were Grover, Gus, and Mosi. The naming contest engaged the local community and even drew national attention, highlighting the widespread affection for the newborn gorilla.
“Local celebrities also endorsed their favorite name, and TCU’s SuperFrog actively campaigned for Gus,” the zoo shared with WFAA. “When Pittsburg State got involved, they encouraged students to vote for Gus, sharing the same name as their mascot, Gus the Gorilla. Within 24 hours, Gus surged from third place to first, surpassing Mosi and Grover.”
Now older, Gus remains a beloved member of the zoo, enjoying time with his parents, Elmo and Gracie. His playful nature and adorable antics continue to endear him to visitors, just as when he was a 5-month-old making new friends. The zoo has continued to document his growth and development, sharing updates with the public to keep the community engaged with Gus’s journey.
In addition to his playful personality, Gus has also become an ambassador for his species, helping to educate the public about the challenges faced by western lowland gorillas in the wild. Through ongoing conservation efforts and educational programs, the Fort Worth Zoo aims to inspire future generations to take action to protect these incredible animals.
The story of Gus and Braylee is more than just a viral moment; it’s a testament to the power of connection and the importance of conservation. As Gus continues to grow and thrive, his story serves as a reminder of the impact that one special animal can have on raising awareness and fostering a sense of responsibility towards wildlife preservation.
