Henry, a seasoned animal rescuer, encountered a dog in terrible condition. The poor pup, later named Dennis, was lying there, too weak to move. As Henry puts it, he met Dennis “on the worst day of his life.” Henry picked him up, and he and his partner raced him to the emergency vet.
The veterinarian suspected the dog was hit by a shovel. Who could be so cruel?! The vet ordered several weeks of crate rest so his legs could heal. During the healing process, Henry spent time with Dennis, assuring the abused dog that there was a ton of love in the world.
Soon, Dennis could slowly walk and found a foster home with an amazing mom named Danielle. Even though Denny (his new adorable nickname) had suffered at the hand of a human, he showered his friends, and foster mom, with puppy smiles and tail wags.
But Denny wasn’t as accommodating to strangers. That’s where his trauma came into play. He’d growl and warn them not to get close. Henry wanted to visit the pup and see how he was doing. He took explicit directions from Danielle. He was concerned that Denny wouldn’t remember him and view Henry as a stranger. Henry didn’t approach Denny and called out to him using his name.
