While many dog parents choose raw food over kibble due to its health benefits, it’s still possible for raw brands to get recalled. After a report of salmonella contamination, Albright’s Raw Dog Food chose to voluntarily recall select products for everyone’s safety.
Salmonella not only poses a risk for the dogs who eat the food, but it can also be dangerous for humans who handle it. Thus, if you have the affected products, it’s important to stop serving them to your furry friends and proceed with caution. Here are the steps you should take.
Which Products are Affected?
The recall was for 67 cases of the 2-pound containers of Albright’s Raw Dog Food Chicken Recipe. The FDA reported the announcement on November 13th, 2020. Any products with the lot code #C000185 with a best by date of May 19th, 2021 are affected.
This product was distributed to consumers in California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee through July and August 2020. Consumers could purchase it through retail stores, online distributors, and direct delivery.
This voluntary recall took place after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found a sample of salmonella in one of the products. At least one dog has become ill from this salmonella contamination. Yet, no humans have been affected so far.
Risks of Salmonella Contamination
Dog food contaminated by salmonella can have risks for both humans and animals. Dogs affected by salmonella may experience vomiting, diarrhea, bloody stool, lethargy, a decreased appetite, or fever. If a dog is infected with salmonella but otherwise healthy, they can still carry the disease and potentially pass it on to humans or other animals.
Humans infected by salmonella can have similar symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. In rare cases, salmonella can lead to more serious health concerns for humans, including arterial infections, muscle pain, arthritis, eye irritations, or endocarditis. If humans or dogs are showing symptoms of salmonella infections, they should seek medical assistance right away.
What Should You Do if You Have This Food?
If you have one of the affected products, you should stop serving it right away. Wipe down any surfaces that the food might have touched, including your dog’s dishes. It’s also important to thoroughly wash your hands after handling the food.
