Some of us have hearts that break hardest for dogs who are different, but not everyone looking for a dog feels that way. But time and again they’re passed over for the more “adoptable” dogs at shelters even though they’re the ones who need a kind heart to open to them the most. Dogs like Sid.

According to The Dodo, Sid was a stray who was taken to Fort Worth Animal Care and Control with a young pup and a face unlike other dogs. At some point, Sid had suffered an injury that caused the muscles on one side of her face to contract permanently, facial paralysis. She was also completely deaf and would need a very special adopter to care for her.

Fort Worth Animal Care and Control knew that finding the right home for Sid would be a challenge, as it is with most special needs dogs, but they also knew that eventually someone would come along who saw the charm in her crooked smile and give her a home. To give her a better chance of finding that home, they transferred her to Animal Hope, a rehabilitation center for dogs with special needs.

Although Sid’s appearance and inability to hear might cause some adopters to shy away from her, Animal Hope has high hopes for her! They describe her as social and sweet, with a BIG appetite!

There are dogs like Sid in shelters all over the world. If you’re looking to adopt, and have a home with a lot of love to give, consider giving a dog like Sid a chance!
