November 11, 2017 will mark the 99th anniversary of the American holiday known as Veteran’s Day, which was originally set to commemorate the end of World War I.
This week, Illinois Comptroller Susana A. Mendoza announced that animal shelters across the state will honor their veterans by waiving adoption fees on all available dogs and cats for servicemen and women on Saturday, November 11.

Amid the tragedy and turmoil of the Las Vegas mass shootings on October 1, Comptroller Mendoza considered cancelling her Monday visit to PAWS Chicago where she was scheduled to announce the Veteran’s Day Pets for Vets adoption event.

Her team felt it may be insensitive to the victims and their families to announce such a happy event so soon after the tragedy, but they ulitmately decided some good news was in order.
The problem, in large part, with society today is there’s so much senseless violence and there’s not enough love in the world,” Mendoza said.
Someone has to wake up these pups and tell them it’s their lucky day to be adopted!

Several local sponsors have donated to make Pets for Vets Adoption Day possible.
The event will have the added benefit of helping to rehome some of the dogs and cats taken into Illinois shelters from hurricane-ravaged Texas and Florida.
“We all know the great sacrifices that these brave men and women have given to this country,” Comptroller Mendoza said. “And though it may be a very small token of gratitude, we hope that their new furry family friend will bring them many years of happiness.”
