Having heard that the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter was in dire need of repairs and expansion, Rescue Rebuild responded and drove over 3,000 miles to heed the call.

The Oklahoma City Animal Shelter is an outstanding organization with a fantastic support staff, but unfortunately, the area had a spike in our little four-legged friends being turned in. Without a sufficient increase in usable resources, they would not be able to adjust to this increase, leaving the animals with no place to go.

Over the course of nine days, Rescue Rebuild had 50+ volunteers, including current members of a specialized Air Force wing stationed at nearby Tinker Air Force Base. 1,300 hours were spent installing 750 feet of chain link fencing, putting in 2,700 square feet of shade cover, and setting up 75 dog beds.

With this great group of volunteers, Rescue Rebuild was able to repair existing dog runs, build a new large run, two medium runs, six new 10×10 kennels, cat enrichment shelves, numerous dog beds, sun shades, and put a new coat of paint on the barn and existing kennels. Now, there are no more animals sleeping on cold concrete floors! New dog runs allow these dogs to get fresh air, sunshine, and exercise while reducing stress, anxiety, and depression.

Constant rain and record high heat and humidity tried to slow progress, but these volunteers wouldn’t allow that to happen. The team completed an impressive amount of work in a short amount of time. With all these new additions and renovations, the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter has all the necessary resources to take in more homeless animals so they can find their forever families!
