“If my dear ol’ dog never got old, if my family farm never got sold, if another bad joke never got told…” So goes Alan Jackson’s 2002 hit, “That’d Be Alright.” Although the country star did not write the song, the lyrics proved fitting this past week as Jackson and his family said goodbye to their dog, Opie – a 15 1/2-year-old Westie. The singer posted a tribute to Facebook on Friday with a photo of Opie riding in a mint green convertible with his famous dad and another pooch.
The video for “That’d Be Alright” also featured Opie in the same convertible, which is actually a mash-up of a boat and a compact car known as an Amphicar!
Fans and dog lovers flooded the comments section with messages of condolence and their own pet loss stories.
“So sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved Opie Taylor. We love them so and miss them so much when we lose them,” commented one user. “He is at the Rainbow Bridge, waiting for you to come and be with him again- and oh, what a happy reunion it will be!”
Jackson has enjoyed more than 25 years in the country music business and has had several dogs over that time. Two of them – Buddy and Goldie – are mentioned in his Facebook post. He was even photographed with a pooch for the cover of his 1990 album, Here In The Real World, featuring the single, “Dog River Blues.”

The soft-spoken singer is known as a devoted and private family man. He married his high school sweetheart, Denise, in 1979 and the pair are still together. They have three daughters, Matti, Alexandra and Dani.
