Dog parents in Florida are urged to keep an eye on what their pets put in their mouth. Several cane toads were seen around a neighborhood in Fort Meyers recently, and they pose an extreme risk to pets.
The cane toad has poison glands that secrete a toxin through their skin that can cause death to animals and humans, but they are a significant threat to dogs, as dogs tend to explore their surroundings with their mouths. Irene Haines told Fox News 4 that her daughter’s dog died “the most horrible death a dog can die” after pawing a frog found in her yard.
Experts recommend being especially cautious during the rainy season and in the evenings, when the toads are more likely to be out.
Veterinarians warn that dog owners to be vigilant while outdoors, watch your dog closely and listen for the sound of the toads – it will be your best warning. If your dog DOES come into contact with a toad, immediately rinse their mouth out with water and take your pet to a vet, as the toxin from a cane toad can kill your pup within hours.
